Anyone who knows me, knows that I love a good shade of lipstick.
After all, us pale gals have to take advantage of our milky white skin. One way to do this is certainly by rocking a great shade of red lipstick. And by red, I mean all the shades, tints and hues that come along with it, including pinks, peaches and purply-reds. If you ask me, nothing can bring a fabulous outfit together quite like the perfect shade of a matte, cream or gloss. I am often asked how I choose the perfect colour and to be honest it is a bit of a process, so here are some tips I would like to share with you to help you perfect your pout and find the right red (or burgundy, or pink..etc. etc.).
1. Exfoliate. I've said it before and I'll say it again, exfoliation is your friend. This is a quintessential step in the process and can make a huge difference to your lipstick application. Despite how creamy your choice of lipstick may be, your dry/cracked/peeling lips will definitely get in the way. All you need to avoid this mess is a quick wipe with a dry face cloth. I wipe my lips in a circular motion to get rid of any dead particles and then dampen the cloth and give them one more wipe. What you’re left with is a perfect canvas for your favourite shade. |
2. Prime Time.
A lip primer is almost always a good idea. Think of it as prepping the canvas that you’ve just cleaned to create the best possible condition for your lipstick to pop. My go-to is Mac’s Prep + Prime. It's absolutely colourless so it’s super easy to use and you don’t have to worry about going outside of the lines ;)

3. Lip Liner..?
Whether or not to use lip liner is an age-old debate. As for my view on the matter – I think lip liner does come in handy, particularly when you’re doing a bright red lip. It keeps everything in line and allows a clean, crisp lip. I know the idea of a lip liner might bring fear to some, but the trick is to find the perfect match. I would suggest you stick to the same brand for both your pencil and lipstick; it is the easiest way to guarantee that they blend together seamlessly.

4. Decide What Look You’re Going For.
It is important to choose the right shade for your look. After all, this could be the make or break, to tie your outfit together. Going for drama and sophistication? Choose a nice deep red with a hint of purple. Flaunting a cute floral fit and flare dress? Stick in the pink family to create a cohesive look. If you're looking for something that really stands out, experiment in the coral family. Coral is a great colour for the warmer months and it is instantly fun!

5. Not Every Shade Is Good For Everyone.
So you’ve picked a colour (lets say deep red for example), now what shade should you go for? Since everyone has different features and complexions you want to choose the shade that’s right for you. If you’re fair with pink undertones, a red with a slightly orange tinge will help to brighten your complexion. If your undertone is more yellow stick with a red that is less pink and more brown. With an olive complexion, your best bet is a red lipstick with some pink undertones to really allow your lips to pop.

6. Glossy vs. Matte vs. Cream.
They each have their moments. Remember to have fun with your lipsticks! Gloss adds an air of flirtatious excitement. A well-applied matte can give you that sense of sophistication and empowerment in a job interview.
