Trends on trends on trends. It can get a little overwhelming seeing all the new trends hitting the stores at the beginning of the season. Having a taller than average body frame, I would like to share some advice that I've learned. Quite simply, there are trends out there for everybody, but not every trend works for every body. Sometimes you need to adapt the trend you see on the racks in order to fit your body type because, after all, there's nothing fun or flattering about rocking a new trend that just doesn't work with your body.
Normally I gain inspiration from magazines, online (check out my pinterest), window shopping and even movies. I determine my list of need-to-have styles that I already know will work for my taller frame and set out on my mission. But the other day, I wanted to try something different. I decided to actually test out the trends that I've been seeing around in the last couple seasons - some that I really thought would never work for my body type. It was a tumultuous test to say the least. Particularly when I tried some trends that I knew would NOT work for my body, and I was right. My shopping companion and I had a good laugh at quite a few different styles. On the other hand, some styles I have previously discounted, being stubborn, actually worked well.

Take a look...
Trend #1: The Romper
So, the romper. Before this excursion, I thought the romper was the bane of my existence, as a taller than average individual. I haven't been able to buy a one piece bathing suit since I was about 10. The curse of the long torso (and long legs) has plagued me for years. So obviously when this trend began, I completely wrote it off. But for this test, it was one of the first items on my list to try. And it was the first to surprise me! Since billowy fits are also in, I was able to find a couple of styles that actually worked with my longer torso. The patterned jumper is BCBG and I loved that it was strapless, but the print was a little too busy for me. I found a black jumper with a lace neckline at Guess that hit all the marks! Long torso, long (enough) legs and beautiful details.
Trend #1 was a success!
Trend #2: Open Shoulder
Off the shoulder has been popular for the passed few seasons and it has evolved into the open shoulder look. In the past, I have been a fan of the off the shoulder look because it is casual and fun. But when open shoulder came around I wasn't really sold on it. I've mostly seen this trend manifest in t-shirts, and I felt like it kind of looked like something was missing... But then I came across this dress at Mendocino. I am in love! This trend is great for the summer festival season. It's a boho-chic feel that I am totally down for.
Trend #2 was a success!
Trend #3: Circle Skirt + Neoprene
This was actually a combination of trends. I've always been a big fan of the circle skirt. It creates a fit and flare silhouette that is fab for girls with a curvier bottom half. We all know that neoprene has been wedging it's way onto racks for the last couple of seasons, but I was consistently skeptical of the fabric. Turns out I was right. Particularly in this cut; it was the complete opposite of flattering. (I don't actually have a picture of me in the skirt because it was soooooo not flattering, but this American Apparel skirt can give you an idea.)
Trend #3 was NOT a success...
Trend #4: Black and White Prints
Although spring tends to bring with it brighter colours to pull us out of our winter blues, this year, black and white have been making a statement all their own. I don't know if it's a sign of maturity or what, but I feel like I have been appreciating the understatement of a great black and white. So I jumped head first into this trend and actually bought the dress I tried on!
Trend #4 was a total success!
After a couple of successes and a couple of flops, I decided to move on to the one thing that is flattering no matter what your body shape is....
Decisions... Decisions...
Have you ever tried a trend that you never thought would work, but then you ended up loving it!?
